they definitely do give idols small roles in dramas all the time but Taecyeon, in particular, is a very well respected idol from like 2008 and he played MANY dramas as the male lead (example: was the male lead in "save me" where the female lead was seo yeji (female lead from it's okay to not be okay) so it was definitely weird that he would accept a drama where his role is just a mere intern (super side character). i feel like him acting as an undercover villain definitely explained why he accepted the role and imo, his acting shined as per usual. BUT to add on, a lot of popular idols also do get lead roles (almost undeservingly sometimes because some of them can't act to save their life but auto get lead roles just because they are popular lol) which irks a lot of people and most definitely irks actors/actresses. a lot of dramas where popular idols star, headlines will always be "_____ acting receives a lot of criticism" edit: there are definitely a lot of very good idol actors ;-; i def didn't say there aren't. just spoke kind of on the stigma since ant asked if it's normal that idols get lead roles

There'e a lot of stigma to idols doing acting. I think the main problem is sometimes idols get roles that they can't do very well and sometimes it's their first time and they are a little bit awkward. I remember IU when she did her first drama and she was critized a lot but she has grown a lot and her acting is now really strong. The same for Taecyeon. He's done a lot of dramas and he's acting is getting better and better. Also Junho from 2pm is really good at acting.

Idols that I’ve seen in dramas who actually did a really good job though: Jinyoung (GOT7), he is absolutely killing it in “the devil judge” at the moment D.O (EXO) and IU obviously, they’re like, the textbook examples of amazing acting from idols. Taecyeon and Junho (2PM) did pretty great in some of the series I’ve seen him in. For the rest, I can’t really think of anyone else off the top of my head.. Also to kind of build off your statement here, Taecyeon is even signed under a different agency, just so that he can further focus on his acting career, so I would definitely consider him more of an actor these days than a so called “idol-actor”. I feel like he has kinda passed that stepping stone. And idols don’t really tend to get big roles the first time around, they’ll oftentimes get a big role in a webdrama as rookie actors though, but generally not in the big cable tv dramas.

Lee Joon is also a pretty good actor he played the younger version of Rains character in Ninja Assasin and has been in many dramas. A couple of my favorites are My Father Is Strange and Heard It Through The Grapevine.

There are a lot doing so many good roles. They may not be main roles but I know a plenty. Yoonha, Suyoung, Yuri from Girls generation, as you said D.O and JinYoung also are doing great. Many idols have the opportunity to get into acting which show just how versatile idols can be. But k-netizens think that idols get roles because the companies want to sell the drama globally (which I think is not a bad thing).

Omg the 2pm reference lmaoo

no they give idols small roles but taecyeon is pretty popular and has been acting for a while

Ultimately the role depends on the skill, schedule and obviously popularity of the idol. Taecyeons part of 2PM and has been acting for a while (and is pretty damn good) so he's super established both within the group and as an actor which is why people thought it was odd for him to take on a seemingly small role as the dorky intern lol. He was also always treated like a main character when it came to the marketing of the show and the pr. What really made me suspect him to be the secret boss was that he's credited third in the intro after the actors who play Vincenzo and Chayoung. Oh and speaking of their marketing they obviously released character posters for the main cast, they actually changed Taecyeons when the plot twist in ep 4 was revealed to portray the other side of his character - just a fun little detail that I love that their marketing team did.

Minho and Key (SHINee) are good and have been in some main roles

I don't think idols usually start off with big roles in fact they probably have to prove themselves by doing web dramas and supporting roles to start. Just like there is a bit of a stigma towards "idol rappers" they don't want to be branded as an "idol actor", meaning they're not that great at acting but they'll get cast so that their fans watch the show. The reason I thought Taec would have a pretty big role is because he's been acting for a while now at least 10 years and he's had some leading roles before. (he's still an idol by the way, 2PM just had a comeback after 5 years) I think acting is a very attractive path for an idol to take because it's much more stable. The risk that you age out or get injured or just lose popularity over time unfortunately affects most Idol groups outside of the top 1% but if you get a stable foothold in acting you could continue to do that.
