Oh I was planning on watching sweet home! I’ll wait to binge it with you. The female actor in the show Lee Si Young is a popular on Tik Tok, I found out through her

Besides Pyongyang the rest of North Korea is poor and its like the time stopped at some point so they never really modernized. It has to do with them not having internet access or any contact to the rest of the world. That's why the Korean language they speak ist quite different from South Korea because the language got influenced a lot from America and in North Korea they speak traditional old Korean. They all used to speak like that until the country got divided. And you can buy things from South Korea but it's not really legal. Unless your rich and have a high status.

i binge-watched sweet home in one day (just about went blind from staring at my computer screen for that long) and i really think you'll like it. the production value was really impressive to me as compared to a lot of korean series i've watched. the cgi was lacking, but imo the makeup/special effects made up for it. i wonder what their fake blood budget was lmao

Maya

I was thinking about binging sweet home too but I don't really have time rn so I guess I'll watch it when you post

Like the skincare stuff and the ricecooker, they smuggle in stuff like tv shows and music too. They would get into trouble if the goverment found out. But lots do it so they dont really snitch on eachother

Yeah, I agree about the CGI, that's why my favorite monster was the tongue one cause that looks mostly practical and really good. Also ... what's up with those two lines they dubbed over??? [in ep 8 or 9 I think]....that was hella strange. lol I heard they had a huge budget and this is now the most expensive Kdrama ever made. I think they could have at least re-shot that if something happened to the audio. Oh well... still a great milestone in Kdrama land so it's still a must-watch imo.

I don't think they have the budget to modernize the country... After all, the leader invests everything they have in the military so... Also, as an isolated country that does no international import and export, they could never be so self-sustainable to the point that their economy can reach such a level.

MsMercedes

oh I've never heard of Sweet Home but I just watched the trailer and I must say I'm intrigued, it gave nothing away lol (btw never saw a live drama with a audio dub option before, for some reason it was my default and it was...not good)

MsMercedes

I did not expect that scene at the end of this episode I guess it goes to show despite how she presents so carefree and a bit spoiled she had/has a lot of deeper issues.

so to answer all your questions, north korea is actually a very normal country 😭 internet exists (though it obviously isnt as readily available for everyone), theres an intranet thats more widely used that people use to access media, and they probably smuggle goods through china since china doesnt really have a sense of borders so many people from north korea travel there (and yes citizens are able to leave the country whenever theyd like, many wealthier students study abroad), and the border is also frequently used for trade which is why back in like 1995 america intercepted it so north korean citizens cant trade and would be forced to starve 🥴 short history lesson but basically after the soviet union collapsed, north korea had no socialist countries to trade with so they tried to join the imf and the world bank so their economy was collapsing + they were hit by continuous natural disasters, but america blocked them and basically forced them to deal with the famine on their own and imposed sanctions to destabilize the country, which is why north korea is allied with china for goods and trade and is part of why north korea holds strong anti-american sentiment (also america is responsible for korea splitting in the first place but yes)

Citizens are not able to leave the country whenever they like. If North Korea send someone on a business trip abroad, they keep all their family members in Korea so the person can’t escape. And I’m not sure if I’d call them a ‘normal’ country since someone just got executed in public for listening to western radio and if your imprisoned your grandparents, parents and children are also all imprisoned for life.

Basically, Kim Jong Un's regime would not benefit from modernizing the country. People would automatically gain more awareness of the outside world, and that would be a threat to his control of the country. What we would see as minor crimes, or even normal behaviour, such as watching dramas from South Korea or questioning your country's leader out loud, can get you sent to prison, labour camps, or even executed. Is modernizing a country like North Korea even possible, while keeping the authoritarian regime they have now? It's really not a simple thing to modernize a country when the power of the leader relies on the citizens being unaware of the outside world.

Most people who successfully escaped from North Korea said that watching media from the outside world (illegally) is what made them aware of how bad North Korea was. In Crash Landing on You, in the village, there was a sign saying "Paradise of the people", which shows how the average North Korean sees their country. They are taught as kids that Kim Jong Un has god-like abilities and is the saviour who gave them this wonderful country. Modernizing would destroy this illusion
