Okay, so the settlements are a big hit!

Which is awesome. And naturally, this means I need to make more. I've got 12-14 more of this Small Village series coming (I'd like to get a total of 20 for the first book release). From there, I'll make another set of useful settlements with a different theme.

Below, I've listed a number of themes based on terrain, size, and humanoid.

  • If terrain type wins, I'll first work my way through all the terrains, focusing mostly on the unique ones (by virtue of geography, there'll already be a lot of coastal, forest, grassland, and hill terrains so those will get excluded). These will likely span various sizes, starting from hamlets and working their way up to bigger settlements.
  • If size wins, I'll work my way through the different sizes (towns, cities, maybe even bigger). Since there are only a few options there, I'll probably just do those in order.
  • And if humanoids win, I'll create individual books for different humanoid races, likely starting with the ones from the PHB and then moving to the DMG. These will likely span various sizes, starting from hamlets and working their way up to bigger settlements.

I look forward to seeing what wins! Two days for voting since that's when I estimate I'll be done with the first book.

Settlements by size was my vote. But I think Terrain Type is also a good choice.

Terrain types are the most useful for any kind of campaign. Some won't have all humanoid races, some will be human only

Size was my vote but terrain was my second choice.

Hey Dave, do you plan on integrating AI for content creation? I'd love to see what a professional such as yourself can do to fine tune the rough inspiration things like ChatGPT provide.

I already do. I find it helps with some of the boring bits (introductions, marketing copy), but I usually spend just as long editing, removing redundancies, etc. as I would just writing it myself. It's kinda like a right brain versus left brain type thing. It's also forgetful AF XD

That's great. I think AI in concert with professionals can really elevate this kind of stuff rather than all these people just typing in prompts and using it unedited without any thought

Terrain and/or biome would help if done correctly. We already have too many forest settlements. What about grasslands? What about the tundra? What about a rocky fjord? What about high alpine? Thanks!

It’s not about the size but about the motion of the oce… I mean terrain.

I really like the idea of settlements based on race. Based on that, terrain would likely be a given.... Say dwarven settlements in mountains, underground, hill country...
