Adventure Level Adjustment Chart (Patreon)
Content
I needed this for my own purposes, so I thought I'd make it all pretty and share it.
Basically, this will help you decide what level of an adventure to throw at a party that has too many or too few characters.
For example, if you have six players with an average party level of 4, they can reasonably play in a 7th, 8th, or 9th-level adventure. Likewise, if you have a 4th-level adventure you want to run, you could run the adventure for six 2nd-level characters, five 3rd-level characters, three or four 4th-level characters, or two 9th-level characters.
The chart uses the Adventuring Day XP as a basis. Keep in mind that most of D&D is subjective, so what may seem easy for one group might be hard for another. Either way, this should act as a good guideline for you all.
Seven or more characters? Honestly, the balance of the game starts to break down pretty heavily at that point, and there becomes a law of diminishing returns. My recommendation is to never run games for more than 6 people. Otherwise, you get stuck in a weird area where adventures are either too easy or way too hard, and not a lot of middle ground.
