In preparation for BroadSword Magazine #1's "Harry Potter'esque" adventure, Evadimus' School for Gifted Spellcasters, I've created some zero-level rules for wizards. Chances are I'll create a few more for the other classes since it's pretty easy to put together now that I have the basic concept down.

I'll probably wrap those up in a nifty little PDF, too, once I've got a few more out of the way.

Let me know what you think.

Zero Level Characters (Prototype) | New Rules for Fifth Edition

One big thing I see a lot of people talk about on Reddit, Instagram, and everywhere else RPGers lurk is how they want better stories on how characters meet. There's also this idea of "0-level characters", basically a Fifth Edition character before it gets all of its cool powers.

Hey Dave! Love the concept of 0 level characters, it's something I've tried figuring out myself a number of times. The only thing I'm trying to figure out here is how to defend around 275 separate combat encounters just to reach level 1 whereas it's only 6 fights at level 1 to reach level 2. Granted the level 0-1/2 characters would need fewer encounters fighting stuff above their level, as do all levels, but still. 275 same level encounters just to reach level 1 seems like a lot. Or am I missing something?

I'm not sure where your math's coming from. It should be roughly 1 fight to hit level 1/8, 4 for level 1/4, 5 for level 1/2, and then 6 for level 1.
