I don't know why... but this was one of my favorite videos from the Deep Dive Series.  It's so... personal and real.  I had no idea that food is literally THE limiting factor on a submarine's ability to dive.  Also, I had no idea meals were such a big deal for morale (Ice Cream on Waffles totally works by the way).

Thank you for supporting Smarter Every Day on Patreon.  I hope you have recieved your baseball.  If you have not, please check https://www.smartereveryday.com/baseball for status updates!

I'm grateful for your support and hope you really enjoy this one. The next video is both amazing certifiably insane, so please look forward to that!

Awesome! Loving these deep dive videos. Am super excited and can't wait to get a baseball! Also thank you Destin for helping me find the most awesome office wall 'thing' in the world! Just got an original Cube Root TIX from halfway around the world and it is brilliant, never would of found them if I hadn't seen your's and it has been a long mission to track one down! Its so simple but so great to see it bugging the heck out of visitors who can't get their heads around it. Hope you are staying safe. Regards from the UK.

This one hits me in the feels since my father was the chief mess specialist on 2 nuclear submarines. Thanks Destin! Also I got my baseball and little note book. Thanks again.

My wife has ‘Down Periscope’ memorized. Love that movie.

Anonymous

Can't get the book from Quebec.. Damn!

Anonymous

Well, we *try* to limit larger angles during meal hours. Most of the time...

Anonymous

It's an insanely stupid movie, but a lot of fun. Watch all the way to the closing credits with the Village People doing "In the Navy" with the crew

I didn’t need to download Thunder Below, I already had it. AND the book!

Steve Jones

Another awesome video! Thanks! And, I'll have to look for Down Periscope..

THANK YOU for posting that name.. I've never been able to figure out what that thing was behind Destin all these years.. I posted the question in comments once, but I know he gets too many to answer everyone! Now I just gotta find where I can get one!!

Bro you are one of the few YouTube Content providers I'm genuinely excited to see when you upload. Keep it up!

So... What do they do with the food waste? Do they dump it, or do they have to save it till they surface?

Anonymous

What is the drawer labeled “bug juice”?

Anonymous

Flying out onto the ice, watching a sub bust thru it, then you go walk up to it and board it....had to be 1 of the coolest if not the coolest activities/adventure this channel has blessed you w doing! A nuclear submarine busted thru the ice just to pick up Destin...lololol...thats just so awesome.

This is honestly one of the most interesting series of videos you've made, I've never really taken the time to consider the challenges of life on a sub.

Anonymous

The WWII diesel boat kitchen was insanely small. Hard to believe they cooked as many meals a day that they did.

Anonymous

Destin, do you have a military rank or do they just call you "sir" because they are polite? :)

Anonymous

You're living my life Destin!~ I wish I could take my Patreon account and use it to fund the adventures you do!~ (just in another industry)

Jeff Murri

I work with soldiers and they always call me sir. I call them sir or by their rank. It's all about being polite.

Hilarious. I saw mark on the list of names and thought...crap...I've gotta download that audiobook. :D

These videos make me really appreciate the young people that are motivated to live this life. It's a really challenging environment even when doing something as "mundane" as serving pizza. I can't even imagine adding all that environmental stress on top of being shot at and working to defend your country. Amazing people, and I'm grateful for them.

I love this series so much. My dad did 20 years in the Navy on Subs, and this series has been a fun way for me and my sons to engage with their grandfather about when he used to work on nuclear subs.

Will the captions be added on soon? Just wanted to be sure. Thanks!

Do you have a list of all Audible recommendations anywhere? Really appreciate you suggested listenings. :p

Dude, this series is great. I served on the USS San Francisco and actually taught a handful of the "nukes" on the Toledo. It was kinda awesome seeing them again and reliving a good portion of my life again. Thanks!!!

smartereveryday

It was really good actually. I like a lot of pizza sauce, and my piece was just how I like it!

Anonymous

Thank you so much. Just watched it. Fantastic one. Question: was the pizza good? :)

Anonymous

I was watching some episodes from PBS Nova about being in Antarctica. Apparently fresh pizza is a pretty important thing there as well!

Anonymous

Wow, those packed freezer & store rooms made me feel a bit claustrophobic just looking at them! So then I was thinking about how the sub is a closed environment similar to the space station, so cooking smells must be really noticeable--I wonder if that is good or bad. I guess that would be a major reason to NEVER burn any food, haha! Thanks for the video, Destin!

Just got around to watching this video, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I agree with you, it’s my favorite of the series. The personal aspect of seeing how the crew interaction with one another, realizing how good food brings us together, it was awesome! My father served on a submarine during the Cold War (and is still active duty!) and he has always loved cribbage. Funny how that’s still a big thing for the Navy!

I've been a submariner for almost 16 years now. The smell of a submarine is something I don't think I'll ever forget. There's a lot of air handling equipment onboard to keep the air clean and "safe" to breath. But, as soon as you walk up to the hatch topside you know what's for chow. That and amine are the prevailing smells of a submarine.

And now I'm craving Pizza....

Anonymous

I wonder if the smell of the pizza wafts through the ship. That would be torturous. :-)
