Great vid - shared! Tilting your head is a good way to try n work out verticals - clever dogs :P Never knew you could mess up your audio positioning so badly by messing with your ears though - fun games!

Dogs' floppy ears are a result of domestication, and I'm assuming that kills their ability to resolve direction from spectral cues. Do undomesticated canines, like wolves and foxes, which have stiff, upright ears, not need to do the head tilt?

I don't know about wolves, but I have watched both foxes and coyotes while they're hunting and they do tilt they heads to better pinpoint the location of their prey. Even my house cats will do that as well, though I'm not sure if it is for better audio precision, or for visual. I do know that I have difficulty locating the direction of a sound because I've lost most of my hearing in my right ear.

I got smarter today and also read some forbidden things. It's amazing how we can read small text that has been compressed so far that most characters are indistinct and we mostly just interpret the shape and length of the words. I've been a patron for a while now.

Youtube comments looked a bit dangerous so I thought I'd post here :) I'm already a Patreon so I guess my blood oath covenant is fulfilled right? Fantastic video Destin, I was all giddy about sharing the knowledge once I'd watched it. Never thought about vertical resolution before and the trick dogs do was the first thing I thought of once I'd put my mind to thinking about it. Oh, and nice shot by your sister, even if she did mean to hit the branch!

Dustin, Thank you for another fascinating video. This one is particularly interesting because my daughter was born with unilateral hearing (no nerve to one ear, fine on the other side). More recently, I've had a growth removed from one of my ears (an acoustic neroma or vestibular schwannoma) which cost me all hearing (and balance inputs) from one side. I've ​ been trying to learn from my daughter how to improve my acoustic location skills while also trying out a BiCROS hearing aid. (wireless transmission of sound from the bad ear to the "good" ear.) Your pointers to articles and the general topic are of more personal interest than many other videos of yours. But all are greatly appreciated. Keep up the great work.

I also subscribed to The Sound Traveler. I'm blown away by your experiment. I watched the Munich video and I felt like I was wandering around the marketplace of Bonn again. I did that a lot when I spent a year abroad in Bonn about 10 years ago. I haven't felt that feeling in a long time.
