Update 2024-01-28: A small patch has been released, 1.6.0a, to fix an issue where reflections from water would display incorrectly behind objects in front of it. It also fixes an issue which caused "twilight squares" to not display.

Good morning everyone! 🌞

I'm pleased to announce the release of the next major update to the Zelda: Twilight Princess 4K texture pack, 1.6.0! This is yet another huge update to the pack with over 230 brand new textures! Changes include new environment textures for many areas in the game, new character textures, new enemy and creature textures, new textures for Link himself as well new material maps for most of them, performance optimizations, improved stability and plenty of bug fixes. And many, many more miscellaneous changes. Here's the detailed changelog:

Overhauled environment textures!

Like prior updates, the environment textures have been overhauled in many areas of the game, and many new ones have been created from the ground up as well in 4K! The new textures cover these regions;

  • Ordon Village

  • Ordon Ranch

  • Ordon Spring

  • Kakariko Village

  • The Sacred Grove

  • South Hyrule Field

  • Lanayru Hyrule Field

  • Eldin Hyrule Field

  • All the caves (Yes, all of them)

  • Gerudo Desert

  • Hyrule Castle

  • Faron Woods

As well as these dungeons:

  • Palace of Twilight (Extensive)

  • Arbiter's Grounds

  • Lakebed Temple

  • Forest Temple

  • Goron Mines

  • Temple of Time

Many new 4K textures!

Many areas have been overhauled this update with brand new textures. There are over 90 new environment textures this time around, with nearly all of them receiving newly created material maps for them as well (making these environments look a lot more fancy than before with more realistic lighting and reflections, in the post processing edition!)

The primary focus this update in terms of environments has been on two locations, namely the Palace of Twilight and all the caves (yes, every single one). The whole Palace of Twilight has been re-textured and now looks even more epic! Future updates will continue to add textures for the remaining dungeons as well, of course. And all caves in the game have been re-textured from scratch (there are quite a few of them, not forgetting the five different grottos as well!)

There are also several new textures for enemies and characters. This includes Bomblings, Skulltula, Midna, King Bulblin, Epona and of course Link himself which has received some tweaks and enhancements to both his human and wolf forms! Several of Link's item's textures have also been re-textured, such as that of the Gale Boomerang and Iron Boots.

New material maps!

New material maps have been created for the vast majority of the new textures to give more surfaces and textures depth and more realistic reflections and reactions to lighting!

Notice about two new Dolphin Emulator features which can improve your experience further (optional):

The bundled Dolphin Emulator that comes with the pack has been updated to a very recent version and now supports several great new features and improvements! Most notably for our usecase is the new "VBI Skip" feature, which can be toggled on within the Dolphin Graphics Settings > Hacks tab > VBI Skip. This feature most notably is capapble of preventing stuttering audio whenever the game lags or drops frames for whatever reason, which can really break immersion. However- this feature is still in beta and can cause issues, so use it with care and save frequently if you do!

The next huge feature directly affectes Twilight Princess directly, and is called "Cull Vertices on the CPU", and can be toggled on within the Dolphin Graphics Settings > Advanced tab. This setting lets the emulator cull (or not display) things which aren't visible on the screen, resulting in potentially huge performance gains, even with the "Hyrule Field Speed Hack" toggled off in the Game Properties > Patches tab! With the Speed Hack disabled, several visual effects will now display correctly in-game, such as the mini map which has been visually downgraded from playing on original hardware since Dolphin's inception. If you have a modern CPU and GPU in your system, I highly recommend that you toggle this new feature on inside of Dolphin and disable the Hyrule Field Speed Hack, since this should now provide the ideal experience overall moving forward! (Note: Disabling the hyrule field speed hack will reduce performance by a fair margin, so only do this if you have plenty of headroom to spare in terms of performance)

New shaders and visual tweaks!

The "HenrikoMagnifico_Ultra" shader has been upgraded and is now enabled by default in the post-processing edition! It has been tweaked to better fit the original style, but still overhauls much of the visuals with new effects such as configurable bloom, ambient occlusion, tone mapping and more. You can of course configure the shader however you like, or disable it entirely from the Dolphin Graphics Settings. Go wild!

Increased consistency and improved quality all around!

Lots of work was done under-the-hood this update to re-review and remake many of the old textures to be higher quality, and to be more faithful to the original artstyle. The game should now feel a lot more like the original GameCube/Wii versions when played with these textures, and a lot fewer should look out of place and blend in better with their surroundings.

Easy version selection!

Starting from version 1.3 onward, the post-processing edition and standard editions have been partially merged. Both versions now share the same folder and Dolphin settings will transfer between them, and they both load textures from the same location. This means the file size of the texture pack has been halved as a result (since duplicate textures are no longer included) and it should also make it possible to switch between the versions as you please, provided you're saving the game normally using in-game saving and not save states (save states are not compatible between versions).

What are the differences between the "Post-Processing Edition" and the "Standard Edition"?

There are two versions of the texture pack you get to select once you've downloaded it. One is the "Post Processing Edition", which includes all the post processing effects showcased in the trailer like ambient occlusion, tone mapping, bloom and more. The other version is the "Standard Edition" which doesn't include these features but has some other benefits instead.

The Post Processing Edition utilizes Ishiiruka Dolphin to achieve these features, and has some graphical features implemented not available in regular Dolphin at all. It also requires Windows 7 or higher (not compatible with MacOS or Linux) and a dedicated graphics card. Both editions include a controller preset for common gamepads like Xbox One, PS4/PS5, GameCube etc. The standard edition version alleviates some bugs present in Ishiiruka Dolphin (increased stability, for example) and supports MacOS & Linux, too! But does not support any of the additional graphical features listed above, like material maps, custom tone mapping, HD bloom, depth of field or ambient occlusion. Both versions look stunning so if you're uncertain I recommend you play the standard version- or try out both and see which one you prefer! The screenshots above have been taken using the post-processing edition.

Enjoy!

This update is available to all you Patrons here, with a public release 1 month from when this post was first published!

There is also a 4K version available, if your computer can handle it! Please feel free to try it out!

Note: The 4K version will look better than the 1080p version, even if you don't have a 4K display. This is because the textures are physically larger and contain more detail in the 4K version, no matter what resolution display you're using!

(Only available for the Dolphin Emulator, the texture pack does not work on real Gamecube/Wii/Wii U consoles).

Read more information about the texture pack on my website!

Updating from an older version is super simple:

Just copy & paste the "GC" and "Wii" folders inside the "User" folder in the texture pack directory over to the new version's User folder and it should work straight away!

This is an outdated version! Please use a more recent version instead to get the latest textures and improvements.

I am only able to make things like this thanks to your support, so from the bottom of my heart, thank you for helping me do what I love!

❤️

Hi, I have installed the xbox layout patch, but it seems to load partially, some textures are not replaced, before with an old patch if the textures appeared correctly, I use a version of Dolphin for Xbox Series S

henrikomagnifico

Hello Jesus, the UI button patch should not have any issues like this. When you say some textures are not replaced correctly, do you mean only the Xbox UI textures? Or does it not correctly display completely random textures, such as the ground or other textures? The first thing I would recommend that you try, if there is such an option in the Dolphin Graphics Settings on Xbox Series S, is to locate "Prefetch custom textures" in the Graphics Settings and disable it, if it has been enabled. This might resolve the issue, if so.

Oh Good, this version fixes the nightmare fuel of the Castle Town Malo Mart clerk having the mouth texture loaded over his eyes when he talks

Hey I’m having trouble getting this to run on android. I’m not able to copy the GZ2 folder into the location specified on my Pixel Fold. Any help would be appreciated!

Hello, great job with the textures, I have a problem, the textures on Android close the game, I tried with the official version and mmjr2 and I have the same problem in both

henrikomagnifico

Hi Dennis! Just to make sure, are you trying to install the Android / iOS version of the texture pack, not the desktop version?

Ray Danger

Any plans for an ALBW update? Thanks for everything!

Hey amazing work. I have two questions. 1. I play on a 4080, and I still have weird audio glitches when playing. Do you know what setting could be doing that? (Ishuuraka 4K post-processing) 2. Despite downloading everything from your links, I can't for the life of me find the "Cull Vertices on the CPU" option

henrikomagnifico

Hi Jeremy! Regarding the audio glitching, it could be caused by several things. In order of priority, check that your game rom is in a .ISO format (not .NKIT.ISO or .CISO), since other formats are not guaranteed to work in the Ishiiruka Dolphin / Post Processing Edition version. Also, if you're playing the NTSC / North American version of the game, I highly recommend that you use the included Widescreen Patch and Patcher Tool to generate a widescreen patched game rom, instead of using the default widescreen cheat code included by default. The widescreen cheat code has several drawbacks over using the Patch, including random stuttering, which might be the cause of the audio issues you're hearing. And lastly, check that you're using the "Direct3D 11" graphics backend in the Dolphin Graphics Settings tab, and that the Audio backend is set to "Cubeb" in the Dolphin Config settings > Audio tab. Please try these things and let me know if it fixed your problem! Regarding the "Cull Vertices on the CPU" option, it's unfortunately only available in the Standard Edition / regular Dolphin 5.x currently. I hope this answers your questions. Cheers!

Moin, I have a bug that the speed increases for a short time, usually when there is a lot of interaction, which makes fights sometimes frustrating. Can you help me with that?

Hi! the texture pack is causing my game to crash on android is this common?

Hello, unfortunately I have the problem when unpacking the Twilight Princess zip for Win. I receive several error messages. e.g. 0x80010135: path too long [metadata type:json] PS5 (normal aiming when holdingR1) Type: Configuration Settings what can I do about that?

Wesley Brooks

Hello-- I thought you should know (and fair warning to anyone else) that using a wide patched ISO via the included xdelta tool will cause the game to lock up and freeze at the conclusion of cutscene leading to the Telma wagon escort gameplay section. Playing this section with the unaltered iso works without issue (even on the same save), but resorting to AR codes for widescreen will result in an undesired stretched UI that is not ideal. I found a reddit post where other people were experiencing the same thing and not using the wide rom was the fix, as well as Youtube comments documenting the same issue. Please feel free to contact me for a save for easy testing of the issue. ^^

Hi good morning, how do I put the texture pack on the Xbox series X? I use Dolphin

henrikomagnifico

Hey! There are some guides available for putting it on Xbox, however I have not been able to make one myself since I don't own an Xbox. Here's a video guide from last year which shows how to do it; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOhYpwbFSRc

henrikomagnifico

Hey and thank you for this information! I've heard of this issue in the past, but I didn't know it was because of the widescreen patch. I will adress this issue in the next version of the pack!

is it possible to use this pack on cemu wii u hd version?
