Following the show Vanity Fair had an interview with a Ukranian radiation expert who was one of the first responders in Chernobyl, fact checking the show, you should watch it when you're done. Among the things she said is that in reality people with acute radiation syndrome are not actually infectious or dangerous to the people around them, but that was a common misconception at the time. Also that the physical appearance of the victims was greatly exaggerated for the show.
