Okay. Yes, you both are making good points. No spoilers, just referencing past episodes, it's true that Alphonse was in that body and it's well-explained that mom wasn't in that form. It was justtt the ingredients they used along with Al's soul. Also, yeah, Hohenheim may or may not have a good reason, and if he has a bad one, it's justified to be huffy-- if not, welp, that'll be just self insert explanations, which could be a reason people enjoy reactions haha. Also the reason it mattered so much to know that was both the fact death is not curable, ie they didn't fail, and they didn't cause suffering yet again. I lovedddd Al's speech on the stairs-- and in the bedroom about never getting to be pissed. Everyone else gets to appropriate his rightful anger and he's not quite so yell-y as Edward or Winry. He tries to understand first. Oh, Al.
