Well this was a very interesting and overwhelming movie that I grew into as it progressed. The best way I can describe this is imagine the editing style of Natural Born Killers mixed with sparkly lights and sweaty nights. Moulin Rouge! is a movie filled with character, charm and style but my push many people away due to the nature of how the story is presented on screen. Baz Luhrmann goes full cocaine mode in shooting this film with editing this is so fast it'll make you dizzy. The first 30 minutes of the film was me just trying to get on board with how it was edited because every second it felt like we were moving on to something else and it was so chaotic. Then, a certain love song happened between our two leads and it felt like everything clicked into place. For the remainder of Moulin Rouge!, I felt like I was comfortably overwhelmed instead of feeling like I was being pushed out of my window at 1 in the morning overwhelmed. The songs were also so brilliant. Now usually, I have a pet peeve for musicals that use modern songs in their movies. "Just use your own and make your own music!" I say. But I think Moulin Rouge will be my exception (well and Mamma Mia!). I love the way that every song is arranged and that songs don't feel like they are thrown in the movie so people go "Oh wow Elton John". Instead, it feels like the movie is almost a celebration of these love songs and the arrangements make them over the top in just the right ways. The crazy editing I was talking about earlier also makes for a few masterfully paced sequences, one especially involving the song "Roxanne". Also, bonus points for sexy Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman... whew!

Your review was pretty much how I felt about this first time. It was hard to follow and the editing was annoying but the more you watch the more you like it.
