Mini Review #75: Chennai Express (2013) (Patreon)
Content
I had no idea what to expect going into this movie but it turns out that this was a fun time with some great laughs, weird but cool camera work, and a fun romance at its core. I was disappointed at first that we were only on the Chennai Express for like the first 20 min of the movie but that disappointment soon dissipated as the movie still retained its fun charm. I was worried that the film would be too slap-sticky for me as I am not really a huge fan of that type of comedy however, the film really surprised me on that front as much of the comedy came from slick word play and crazy situations. While some of the comedy definitely went over my head (which will always happen when a movie is in another language), there were many moments where it was easy to infer the comedy based off of the context given and the characters actions. The camera work as well as both really good and randomly crazy. Expertly crafted transitions were everywhere in the film and a lot of the wide shots were beautiful to look at. On the other side of the coin, some of the action sequences were filmed with this crazy zoom effect which was both funny and intense. The music was the real hero though as the background music was so insanely epic and dramatic at times it felt like I was watching LOTR!!
Overall, while not the best flick in the world, a really fun one with a nice message and great characters.
