I decided to watch the 2005 version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory instead of the 1971 version due to the simple fact that I had never seen this version before but I have seen the original about 5-6 times. I actually really enjoyed this version and found that is still retained some magic, mystery, fun and weirdness that the original movie had/the book probably has (as I have never read it). The score first of all by Danny Elfman was so good! It was the weirdest, loudest and most whacky soundtrack I have heard in quite some time and it fit the movie perfectly. The oompaloompa's were also great and had some absolutely banger songs. I was disappointed that their titular song was never sang but oh well. Johnny Depp as Willy has some big shoes to fill after Gene Wilder's exceptional performance and I have to say, I actually maybe potentially like his version a little more? Could be recency bias talking but I really liked the subtle depth of character portrayed under the quiet and weird exterior. I actually enjoyed his backstory about his dad and found the resolution very touching. Overall, I really entertaining movie and a worthy remake of a classic film!

As a Christopher Lee fan I loved this movie.
