Ok so this has to be one of the best romantic dramas I have ever seen. Everything about this movie worked for me from the amazing score, cinematography, directing, acting and story beats. Ryan Gosling and Rachael McAdams steal the show with charming and intimate performances but the real emotion comes from James Garner and Joan Allen who absolutely made my heart melt and created a tsunami of water in my eyes. The music can swell too crazy heights while also sometimes being absent entirely allowing for a very intimate soundscape. Along with that intimacy comes the subtle camera work that doesn't cut often allowing for a lot of breathing time with our characters as they just talk. I think the real hero of this story is the writing though. So emotional and impactful at times. Even though the ending is clearly stated by the movie about halfway through, the film still managed to keep me pining to see what comes next. Also, the way certain characters and scenarios are written do a great job at subverting romance genre trends in ways that feel fresh and satisfying.

If you want a good cry or just want to see an iconic and well made romance film, this is the one for you!

I saw The Notebook when it was released and loved it. It’s one of about 10 movies that makes me cry. It falsely has a reputation as a “Hallmark” or “Lifetime” movie. It’s not. It’s very well directed by Nick Cassavetes, John Cassavetes’ son. It turned me into a Ryan Gosling fan and I had the good luck of meeting him twice. He’s very nice and down to earth. The whole cast is amazing in this film. Joan Allen is a standout in a very strong supporting role and I met her once and praised her performance in this film. This is a great date movie, as it captures what really matters in relationships. It’s also a movie that moves me on rewatch, as I’ve seen it at least 3 times. Great mini review, Ollie!
