Mini Review #49: Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) (Patreon)

Top tier romance movie. Came out the same year as Before Sunrise and I have to say, 1995 was a good year for romance. Honestly an amazing movie with so much heart, beauty, and soul throughout. Amazing songs that will have you dancing and looking wistfully at what could have been/what could still be that are also so full of colour and feeling. You may cry, you will definitely smile with happiness, and maybe have your mouth agape in shock once or twice. The chemistry between the two leads is outstanding and their development from cheeky travellers to romantic dramatic romantic partners was very believable. I also loved how the movie, while breaking free of the traditional values and roles for women in some families, still finds the time to honour tradition through the father character. I thought it was really well handled and was a message that could be understood even if you have never experienced that culture before. Lastly, the locations were so beautiful. From glorious south of France mountains to yellow flower fields in India that stretch on forever, I was always amazed at the beauty these locations held. While it is not a perfect movie and I do think that there are some parts that could have been trimmed down, it is probably one of the better romance movies I have ever seen!
