I believe the original cut was far more graphic and the movie would have gotten a X rating so they cut some parts out, not sure how much, to reduce it to an R rating. I think all those quick horror scenes or flash images may have been whole scenes. I don't believe there was ever a "director's gruesome" cut ever made... sadly hehehe...
