Star Trek did badly in ratings getting cancelled after season 2 and then renewed after a fan campaign without the same writers and directors and with an extremely slashed budget. It became a hit because there was a renewed interest in space stories after the moon landing which happened after the show ended and most people fell in love with it watching the afternoon daily reruns. This was the first appearance of the Klingons. The look is better here than the other two Klingon episodes of the original series. City on the Edge of Forever I think is so popular due to the ending the time travel and in the 80s when the Star Trek fan base was really growing the actress playing Edith was on one of the top series on TV so it had that famous guest star status as well. You guessed right Shatner, Nimoy and De Kelly all grew up during the depression.
