Another great Ollie quote: "Don't ever let Khan style your hair." Very good analysis of the villains/antagonists in the Star Trek universe. In both TOS and TNG an effort was clearly made to have the apparent "villain" of an episode actually be a person or species that was either misunderstood, or had good intentions but had unknowingly acted in destructive ways. You also made an astute observation about most of the episodes ending on a hopeful note. At the time, this was true of most episodic tv, and in particular "Star Trek"; it was believed that the audience would be less inclined to return after a "downer" ending. With "Star Trek," Gene Roddenberry's vision of a hopeful future guided such decisions in the writing of the episodes. One of the most notable exceptions is the conclusion of an episode which you'll be watching soon; it ends on an eerie, somber, and strangely dark note. But it was definitely appropriate for the story.

There are a pair of novels called Star Trek: The Eugenics War that take place in the 70s-90s and try to explain how Khan could have existed based on real historical events. It is a fun read. The Star Trek WW3 era is also visited in a two parter on DS9. Khan looks good for being 46 when this was filmed.
