I saw this in the theater as a teenager with my Trekkie parents. Being a family who watched the entire TNG series together as each episode was aired on network each week we were BEYOND excited to see the crew on the big screen. OMG just seeing their names in the opening credits was almost too much. Lol We were so enamored that we didn’t give two flips about the FX or the story. The overlap of Kirk and Picard was good enough for us — and how fitting that Kirk doesn’t just take a few minutes to die, but rather 80 years!! Haha We were ready for TNG to take the movie torch and this movie was had great fun doing so. Very happy you got experience it in your current Trek trek.

I've always loved all the next generation movies but, I do think you're right about Kirk's death. I think that's the reason most people don't like this movie in particular. The next one is great and I'm definitely looking forward to your reaction to it. Insurrection and nemesis also has a lot of haters but I still enjoy them and I think you will too.
