Great reaction! You mentioned that you are not affected much by supernatural horror, and I am very much the same. However, there is another point of view for this film, such that even religious skeptics can find it chilling. I tend to see this film giving the point of view of a psychotic parent, whose delusions about strange and deadly events convince him that his tiny child is evil and has to be ritually slaughtered. The film raises a terrifying possibility of a series of events that prompt a delusion so powerful that it would lead a parent to attempt to kill their own child--a child who was not in the film much and did not actually do anything one would not expect a small child to do. This can be a terrifying film, religious or not.

I’m another one who doesn’t find this movie that scary but the great filmmaking sets etc. make this a classic horror film up there with The Exorcist and original Amityville Horror
