This movie was meant to be a comedy. There was some early discussions of hiring a comedian as the biologist. For people who like comedic Star Trek it’s a favorite. I agree with you it is a bit boring. The good thing is this movie made a big profit which convinced them to make another tv series. The original series episode they did the same time travel maneuver is Tomorrow is Yesterday in Season 1. The next movie is by far the weakest mainly because the idea was expensive and they had a very small budget and because William Shatner had never directed before he didn’t realize it wouldn’t work until it is too late. They go back to the director from Khan for the sixth film.

The whales were not CGI, they were practical models. Animal rights groups actually got upset at this movie because the whale models were so good that they believed real whales were being used. BTW... $100 in 1986 is $270.23 in 2022.
