I put this comment on YouTube as well but I want to ensure you see it. There’s a ton of other trivia about this movie I won’t bore you with 🙃 So glad you watched this!! While you’ve said that most people who enjoy this probably saw it as kids in the 80s, it may surprise you to learn that Pee-wee started as an adult comic and people of all ages were/are fans. He had a standup show as Pee-wee that became such a big hit that they recorded it for HBO in 1981 (that’s how I first saw him, my parents had taped it off tv). He even toured as the character doing his stage show, and regularly made tv show appearances. Always as Pee-wee. (Many are on YouTube, search Pee-wee on Letterman!) There’s also a video of the movie premiere party. So many celebrities showed, including rappers! Everybody loves him. He got a tv show after the movie and character were so successful, but geared more toward children (Pee-wee’s Playhouse). The character would be best described as a “man-child” and mostly asexual (like a kid might be). It’s my understanding that it was Paul Reubens who suggested to Tim Burton that they get Danny Elfman to score the film because he loved his band Oingo Boingo. Danny hadn’t done a film score before and said no, but they finally convinced him to do it! Can you imagine if that didn’t work out!? Burton’s films would be so different. Also, I think Phil Hartman was high in the credits since he co-wrote the film 🙂
