I know this reaction was posted 8 months ago, so you might already have found the answer to how it was done in one shot without cutting away … just in case you haven’t … Superman flying away was a back projection filmed in advance. Christopher Reeve was waiting outside the door all along.

Superman II is a no brainer. Definitely watch it. Both Terrance Stamp and Gene Hackman as villains in the same movie? I'd buy that for a dollar! I'd even give Superman III a pass, because it has some iconic sequences of its own even if overall it isn't up to par. There is a scene where a broken Superman has to fight his own alter ego for control... I won't say anymore, but the implications psychologically of having a dual identity which is explored within this sequence and the scenes around it are applicable beyond the normal superhero trope.
