Tsuru is basically same oldfart gen as Garp & Sengoku are. They are pretty much the oldest ppl still actively in the marines. So think of basically the Naruto squad, w/ Tsuru being the Sakura to Garp & Sengoku Naruto & Sasuke basically (of course their relationships are less cringe than using Sasuke as an example implies, but when you think of the shonen squad member make-up, one tends to think of the squad from Naruto ratio wise)

Whitebeard is not a giant, he might have some giant blood though (not sure how a non-giant and a giant would mate in the first place for that though)

Blackbeard had a plan, for which he needed the Yami Yami no Mi, like he said before, he had a Book where many or all Devil Fruits known are listed with picture and all. So he joined Whitebeard to stay in his shadow because he thought that that would give him the best chance to find it. So once he saw the Devil Fruit he knew exactly that it was the one he wanted and for that he killed Thatch to get it no matter what. And with the Devil Fruit obtained he could set his plan into full motion. And yeah, Whitebeard is not a Giant, I mean compare him to Brogy and Dorry from Little Garden. A normal Human is like the size of 1 of their fingers.

Adding on to this, Blackbeard mentioned that if he never ended up finding the devil fruit he wanted (The Dark-Dark Fruit), he would have just quietly lived under Whitebeard for the rest of his life.
