Narrator literally called Sano a Bum leeching off people. When your holding a grudge you sometimes can't see the obvious, its ironic that that guy in trying to avenge his old mentor is going against what he actually believed in. He probably didn't study himself because he was busy conducting a war/revolution to bring that era he was talking about, and felt he was already past the point where he could change, while the two boys were still young and had their lives ahead of them. He holds a grudge against Kenshin for the same reason Sano did, as part of the people that framed their mentor. I think Sano did the party to try to change his friends mind about something and has no intention of letting is friend go through with his plan, and knew Kenshin wasn't asleep.

Things don't have to be necessarily pleasant to be Nostalgic, you can look back on mundane or even bad memories and laugh about them. For me the fact I remember when VHS tapes were a thing and DVD's were the new item is Nostalgic, when game consoles you plugged in those two color cords, when you could watch TV without Satellite or Cable, etc.
