Personally, I think what Arata did was fair play, and showed off not only his quick thinking but also his ability to strategize. You misread the subtitles during their battle at one part of it; you thought Arata was claiming that “with Miyo’s ability, we’ll be able to manipulate minds directly”. But what he actually said was that “with Usuba’s ability […]”. As in, the Usuba bloodline, and everyone in the Usuba family. Including himself. Arata has the supernatural ability to create illusions, which is something that directly affects your mind. As you said yourself, he’s very manipulative. But that’s the nature of illusions, isn’t it? To manipulate people into believing one thing is real as compared to another… His supernatural ability is quite literally “manipulation”, imo. And he did just that throughout the entire battle sequence. He waited until Kiyoka was arguably in a position to win to show off his ability in the first place (and keep in mind, we were also shown at this point that he can make a singular copy without the smoky effect), then he revealed he can make copies of himself, then he revealed that there isn’t actually a limit on the number of copies he can make of himself, and then he revealed that he can actually make copies of whomever he wants and isn’t limited to just himself. He was leading Kiyoka by a leash that whole time, imo. He had Kiyoka right where he wanted him in the end. So I don’t think it was a dirty trick like throwing dirt in someone’s face. I think everything he did throughout the battle was strategically thought out, up to the very last instance where he mercifully spared Kiyoka’s life instead of killing him. After all, that was the nature of a “serious” duel: killing the losing party to claim victory. But he spared Kiyoka because he knew Miyo would be grateful for such an action. That part was to manipulate her later on, I’ll bet.
