Lots of Modern LN protagonists take a page from Oreki as a protagonist and take him in a different direction, you'll see a bit of Hachiman, Amane, Tomozaki, and even a hint of Ayanokoijo in him. The anime came out in 2012 but is based on a Novel Series that started in 2001 (Not a LN series but a regular Novel series.) So it predates a lot of tropes that became popular in LN Slice of Lifes and Romances in the 2010's.

There's a lot of subtext in each line, its the kinda thing that benefits from a rewatch, and little details going on in the background. If you notice Oreki was nervous and looking the entire time when Satoshi was telling the "mystery" to Chitanda. Basically Satoshi was simply asking why Oreki doesn't just blow Chitanda off like he does other people, the answer of course is because Oreki can't say no to her..... You can guess why that is.

Notice how Satoshi was left out on the conclusion of the mystery.....that's so foreshadowing. Also he specifically is trying to get Chitanda Curious in order to get her to make Oreki solve mysteries why do you think that is?

He's more like Sherlock, the Hyouka Novels are written in the style of old "Gentlemen Detective" Novels, and a lot of the series contains nods and references to various works in the Mystery genre.

One interesting thing of Hyouka animate is that they did keep a lot of hints visually presented fairly to the audiences. Therefore we can actually try to solve the mysteries on our own before the answer is mentioned. (for example 1st Ep the janitor passed by give hints to the locked door mystery, and Eru knowing Oreki from different class because of electives give hints to school history mystery in 2nd Ep). The first two episodes kind of just getting to know about the main characters and the original novel can be classified in the genre of "daily mysteries". throughout the whole season there are both main stories that continues for several Eps or some short stories that concludes in one Ep.

The MC's motto kinda reminds me of the MC from Eminence In Shadow... just that attitude of being a background character and not bothering or exerting effort on things you don't need to.

Gotta say after watching the dub the first time and after watching this. I much prefer Chitanda's English voice over the Japanese one. Also, the rest of the English va crew isn't half bad either.
