Something funny about this is that just 2 days ago in Gundam IBO Urdr Hunt it was confirmed that the Gundams there are also sentient. Making Aerial part of those who are, alonside the 72.

Gundam is full of nuance, the vibe I got from the prologue is that her bonding with the Gundam was a tragic thing that couldn't be taken back. You could be right on the mad scientist front, but it seemed more than just she just put her daughter into a machine because science. The writing in Gundam is levels better than that, so I'm betting we get more back story later explaining what actually went down.

Now we're seeing the traditional "high stakes" of the Gundam franchise. The 1st cour was decent, but not quite as compelling to me due to the whole duel system and mostly school setting. We're still 2 episodes into the 2nd cour and we're starting to finally pick up steam.
