my first thoughts were that Thorfinn needs to remember that his father told him that a true warrior doesn't use a sword even the battle to his fathers death he only used his fists and didn't kill anyone showing Thorfinn that his intent wasn't to kill but to protect him like Thorfinn did by instinct for Einar with that punch and what he wanted to do for the old lady as he told her to run as they invaded her village.

i think it's because all he remembers is destroying things and can barely remember anything that gave him any warmth before all the hatred for Askeladd but as he gets kicked in the head the imagine of the kind old lady and his father telling him something comes back before he falls into the dark pit in his mind like mentally hes trying to remember what he had before. i think he will start changing for the good once he realizes he needs to use his strength to protect others that he cares for instead of taking out of hate like he has for so long.
