I think it wasn't about the facts of their relationship but about her friends reaction. Also marrying your cousin is legal in japan and although this type of relationship isn't common it is also not as super uncommon as you might think. Especially with double standards. It might be less "frowned upon" by your peers if your cousin is a "dreamboat".
