I think some kind of "cycle of violence" is in play here. Ranko got put behind the joint and lost her youth because she retaliated, and then her connection to the past caught up to her. As shown in episode 10, Ranko, Panda and the hitman formed a tragic cycle because of love and assassinations. Now Ranko got assassinated abruptly just like Ranko's head maid did, and it will be interesting to see what Nagomi will do when she has to face her belief of "fight but no kill."
