[ Sorry for long comment: ( ] They just skipped the contents of "The Siberian Dancing Girl". In the source materials (LightNovel) there are more about the autobiography of great-granddad and it's deeply connected to Mizuto and Yume's thoughts. As mentioned in the show, his great-granddad was held captive in the Soviet Union War for a tough period, but got a better living as being the translator between Japanese captives and the Soviet Union Army. During that time, he met a girl, daughter of Soviet gerenal and they fell in love. At the end,the Japanese captives were allowed to return. The girl's family ask if he is willing to stay, they can offer him job and get married with the girl. But he wasn't brave enough to abandon his homeland, starting a new live with the girl he liked. He left, with regrets. The girl blessed him all the best in the journey but deep in his heart all he was thinking: "I really wanted you(the girl) to stop me from leaving" (the final line they show us). The situation is similar to Mizuto and Yume. They don't really want to break up, they just want the other side to do something and try to fix the relationship. They really "wanted each others to stop them from leaving". But they just missed the chances, just like great-granddad regrets about not staying with the girl he fell in love in Siberia. About Mizuto's thought, we can actually compare his relationships with his mother and Yume. Everyone saying "I'm sorry for your loss" as his mother passed away, but in Mizuto POV, he didn't really feel that he had "loss" because he barely remembers about his mother. While Yume being his girlfriend is literially the first "special relation" he built up with people other than family, and as they broke up, the relation was gone and this time he finally realized, the feeling of "loss" in a close relationship. That makes the "special place for the only one" in his heart.

Nice commentery. I like this series, but there is better romance story.
