man i dont know how to feel im glad they animanted this but they are changed many of the events time line wise and skipped alot as for how he eats he bought the skeleton avatar put he those have race and due to the backstory he wrote for his character it did take effect

The manga has Arc saying his look is only a skin his race was actually human. I might be wrong it's been a few months since I read the early chapters but I think Arc says that the only playable race was humans.
