at least in fiction got to see it often in mangas - though it is less about the spelling of the name and more the writing were kanji is just a simple replacement code like a gets replaced with kanji1 and b gets replaced with kanji2 etc... but they have for each syllable (japanese letter) more than one kanji and the other way around each kanji has most likely more than one reading one example fireworks is in japanese hanabi - syllables ha na and bi hana means flower (though depending on pronounciation it can mean nose too) an bi is one way to read the fire kanji/means fire so in japanese fireworks are named fireflowers because of how they look in the sky and the flower part hana gets replaced with the kanji read hana and meaning flower(s) and the fire part bi gets replaced with the kanji read bi and meaning fire so for stuff like that the kanji is kind of representation of its own what the word means but since that doesnt work with family names directly - people have a certain freedom to pick the kanjis ro represent the syllables of their childrens names and that needs then always a verbal/written introduction though for people you meet only once somewhere on the street etc that kind of a detailed explanation can feel weirdly formal / over the top...

Next arc is my favorite, so I'm excited for next week! About Kunimi's girlfriend, she is very slowly improving. She showed Sakuta Futaba's account instead of reporting her to the school because she knows Sakuta can help her. Kunimi's girlfriend is still a bitch, but she does at least have some good intentions.
