My guess to how he's strong from parrying wooden swords is that every time you level up a skill all your base stats increase. Since all his skills are tier 1 I'm guessing they're easy to level up compared to higher tier skills, this would also explain why he seems to be so strong compared to others. Afterall he spent years grinding those tier 1 skills.

It may be annoying, but it's very much a real thing. If you have been told your entire life that you are worthless, you eventually start to belive it yourself, even in the face of evidence. It takes a lot of time and effort to get out of that mindset, garanteed. At a certain point you even actively refuse to belive that you can be worth something. You often need a professional help. He was told since he was a boy that he was too weak to be an adventurer, over and over again, that he had no skills etc...And of course it's an anime, so everything is exaggerated.
