Lawrence r/wallstreetbets moment. The reason is easy, all the ones he's been running to ask for loans know him from the past, and as daddy guildmaster pointed out, he used to frequent brothels w/ the other noob merchants etc, and there this mf comes begging around for gibsmedats, w/ a town girl in tow, so they connect 1 +1 = 2 from those facts, and thus they aren't going to hand out gibs for someone who has a money vacuum like that behind him, because of the implications. Also he's also not fulfilling his duties as a man either (i.e being the moneymaker), which is culturally big no-no, and would bring dishonor to a female's reputation if some other male were to hand out gibs instead of the partner, so none of the others want any part in that shit, at least nobody of any decent reputation would want to get besmirched for dishonoring a female like that. Basically he's fucked either way of the 2 outcomes, where they view Holo as a female of certain reputation, or as someone being courted by Lawrence which would be more affected by the latter reasoning for refusal rather than the 1st conclusion

Lawrence was going to settle with just coin payments for his last deal with peppers, however that deal was manipulated by the other merchant yet it was spotted by Holo as well, so Lawrence has taken advantage of the situation and envisioned a bigger deal with the armors, and he paid for some of those armors with the peppers as a down payment in addition to buying more armors through striking a loan agreement in hope of gaining extra income by trading all those armors, without knowing that the market for armors has just shrunk drastically recently. That merchant actually knew about the shrunken market, so soon after he sold the loan to another trading company, whom is also looking to recover from the shrunken market, and the merchant just outplayed Lawrence as he has transferred a bunch of useless asset that he previously owned, received a lot of peppers from Lawrence and made a fortune by selling Lawrence's debt.
