I think that the church has the ruling power across various of regions, which makes them a very appealing option for trading expansions as well, so Yarei probably just wants to "sacrifice" a "possessed woman" in order to gain some favor from the church for more trading opportunities and less tariffs. And Yarei didn't need to kill Holo as his village have already found a way to harvest the crops abundantly without Holo's meddling. Even though Holo was just trying to maintaining the crop fields for the long run as she had caused occasional bad harvests for the village before, and the villagers didn't like that.

After watching both versions of this episode, I think that each design of the wolf transformation goes hand-in-hand with each design of the humanoid Holo from the two adaptations. While the design of Holo from the original adaptation is sharper and more graceful, the design of Holo from the current adaptation is fluffier and more lively.
