Timing-wise, considering those "flashback scenes" are taking place late November, it's between end of S1 (Scorching Halloween) and beginning of S2 (as it begins with a New Year's shrine visit). "The Grudge" was the result of the Great Asian Union (China, basically) attacking Okinawa as seen in the Reminiscence Arc. And, as far as the flashbacks themselves, it's adapting LN content I had completely forgotten about since it's been years since I've read it - became certain of that with Aunt Maya casting Meteor Stream/Meteor Line (JP vs EN names) on Tatsuya with him breaking it.

At the end there, it seems that the Aunt was finally beginning to acknowledge Tatsuya. Even though he defied her, it ended up working out for the family's benefit. I think that the recognition by the First High School of Tatsuya's prodigious Engineering capability (thus creating an entirely new school division devoted to Engineering) is a low key representation of the Yotsubas (or at least his Aunt) beginning to recognize Tatsuya's worth outside of strict magic utility. Put differently, even though his individual "normal" magic skills are sketchy at best, his utility with magical technology (CADs, etc) is cutting edge, which could upgrade the abilities of all the Yotsubas as a result. A rising tide lifts all boats, in other words. If it were Harry Potter, it would be like Ollivander (the wand maker) being capable of giving everyone an Elder Wand upgrade. That's too big to ignore long term. Prime example for Tatsuya was suddenly everyone being able to fly; that hadn't been a thing prior to Tatsuya figuring it out, and him sharing that upgraded ability with everyone else.
