Happy All Souls Day patreons! For this holiday special the second part of my epic discussion with Jimmy Falun Gong on two classics of 90s underground horror cinema is on tap. In the first installment, we broke down the enigmatic "Halloween VI: The Curse of Michael Myers," a film that came out during a curious time for horror. Especially the slasher subgenre.

The 80s boom had peaked and "Scream" was yet to be released when the above-mentioned "Halloween" film and "Texas Chainsaw Massacre IV" were filmed in 1994. Slasher films were the epitome of un-hipness at the time. In many ways, this freed up veteran filmmakers to produce some of their most ambitious works. Long time horror scribe Kim Henkel, making his directorial debut with "Chainsaw IV," was no exception.

In point of fact, the last 30 minutes of this film are among the strangest pieces of horror cinema ever filmed. Illuminati conspiracies galore, thinly veiled references to Adolfo Constanzo, the Hand of Death, and nationwide serial killer cults with military ties are only scratching the surface of what's on screen. Behind the scenes is even more interesting: the University of Texas at Austin, its Discordian milieu, and how all this bleeds into "True Detective" --both the series and the celebrated true crime pulp mag. Not to be missed.
