Guh, that was kind of terrifying. This Zorian is scary. One thing I notice is that he's definitely not advanced at Soul Magic. Heck, it's not particularly late in the original where he's able to contact his simulcrums through his soul. That he doesn't do that here is super odd to me. Also, even though his shaping skills have been reset, it's also clear that he's able to do a lot. While this Zorian definitely had some similarities to the original, his path must've been entirely different. Everything after book 1, I guess? Yet even then, it's not clear how much he's doing with the Aranea. He's basically totally AU. This chapter is torturous. You can really almost imagine another book out of it. Probably people focused, where Zach brings back the humanity to Zorian. (What I wonder if basically this is a very long time after the original fic, where Zorian ending up losing his memory and one of the rest of them tried to remake him, but couldn't go about it correctly at all.)

The idea is that fusing with his simulacrum so closely requires something more than simple communication through the soul. Remember that when Zorian fuses with his simulacrums in canon they have to be next to him and focusing on the same task. Admittedly, part of the reason is that I wanted to showcase a neat idea (gate amulets) and put that limitation there so I could do so. But yeah, this is a totally different Zorian compared to the canon one.

One possible hilarious idea I had, that looping characters out of loop would be ridiculously ineffecient and would be woefulle unprepared for the challenges of 'single attempt world' despite their ridiculous competence in certain areas. I once even considered an idea of a story about character, who's out of a time loop and is very awkward because of their mindset and skillset adapted to the environment others aren't even aware of and doesn't exist anymore. Basically, to think about competence outside of simple linear progression.

Another great chapter! Congrats on the audiobook release, Domagoj!

I also thought about a higher tier loop, but I had imagined it as centered on Shutur-Tanara and ending with the apocalypse or something.

Many of the looping characters seen in fiction and fanfiction would definitely struggle out of the time loop, since they have a habit of doing any crazy thing that pops into their head, rely on knowing *exactly* what people are going to do in any given situation, and treat death as a mere inconvenience. I don't think it's possible for people to just suddenly forget these behaviors once out of the loop, and I definitely had that in mind while writing MoL. The story even touches upon these things on a coupl eof occasions. I do think that the fact the time loop is an entire month long in the story, and the fact Zorian spend a relatively short amount of time in one (decades rather than centuries) would keep the consequences to a minimum. All this said, I think any time looper is going to have a pretty good chance to survive and thrive once they're out of the loop, purely because they will have incredible skills to back them up. Unless the setting is totally mundane, an ultra-skilled, high-powerful person can probably carve out a place for themselves eventually, even if they're otherwise full of bad habits.

this was great and I hope there ends up being more chapters of this specific AU.

Yes... but in the world filled with entities like QI, dragon mages, immortals celestials and demons, who don't have any such habits, they might cost dearly. Even this version Zorian, that have mental enhancements/editing might posess a few, that could prove fatal without a powerhouse prediction ability, as he might filter out thoughts, necessary for survival and adaptation. Outside of conflicts with the best of the best immediately out of loop, they'll be fine. Perfect comedy material, too. Remind's me of Xykon's rant in OotS about powerful wizards/villains not being equal. https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0652.html Those who died are not the same as, who who stayed in the "game", so to speak. Obviously, just because somebody is powerful and been alive for a while doesn't necessarily mean they are as competent as they should be, but they are more likely to be that way.

And eta on a paper copy of the book? Also wow that is a grim timeline.

Oh god, that's hilarious! You can take the Zorian away from Xvim but you'll never take away the Xvim that's within Zorian's mind already.

That was a great chapter. That last line really hit home. Zorian might not believe in Zack’s promise but there are so few people he can meaningfully connect to he latches on to it anyway.

DiabolicalGenius

Being trapped in the loop forever with no idea when it would end and no way out would break anyone eventually. It's not strange that he ended up so detached and inhuman after all that. Very interesting to read though. Makes you wonder if he'd ever figure it out and solve it if he had thousands of years to do it in. And how much of Zorian would be left in there when he was done. BTW, are you ever gonna do an AU chapter about if Zorian was chosen for the loop originally instead of Zach? If he knew how the loop worked and had the entire duration to keep grinding his abilties until he was satisfied? Plus since it's Zorian, he wouldn't have been trusting enough to be caught off guard and mind wiped by Red Robe along with him surely having developed his psychic abilities enough to fend off anyone who tried. He'd probably considered the risk to his mind and soul too, so no soul meld to bring another looper in either. The biggest danger wouldn't have been the isolation risking his sanity. It'd be interesting too see.

Wow, this was a great chapter. I almost want to read a sequel based on that XD By the way, do you have any plan to create a Discord server for your reader community?

nobody103

I'm not really a Discord guy, and wouldn't be able to maintain a server, but somebody already made a MoL server recently and I sometimes show up there (though it's rare). Here's a link: https://discord.gg/PZ9kZyXX

Adrien Matricon

Ooooh, nice. Thanks for the link, and don't hesitate to give it in some way to the people on RoyalRoad (the more the merrier)
