Apparently Patreon Data describes it as a better all around accessible tier.

Because the bigger the patronage, the larger the cut they take, so it's in their interest to get us to pay more in whatever way possible.

It would make you more money so yeah. I think the reasoning behind it is that if someone is paying $1 its unlikely that a shift to $2 is going to make anyone jump the boat. However, if someone had to pick between paying $2 or $1 for the exact same "product" they'll pick $1. Even if they are willing to pay $3 dollars.
