I didn't mind the age gap at all. What I DO object to is the age old problem (excuse the pun) of using actors who are far older in real life than the part that they are playing. In my view it would have been far more realistic if they had chosen an actor who actually was 24 rather than Hammer's actual age of 31 at the time of filming. In this respect, Hammer was badly miscast in my view. I would have much rather seen Oliver played by a good looking 24 year old actor. You can't help who you fall in love with, so as far as I'm concerned, the age gap isn't an issue at all (as long as it's all legal of course). For example there is a 20 year age gap between Tom Daley and his husband Dustin Lance Black (screenwriter of the Oscar winning film called 'Milk'). They married each other when Tom was 20 and Dustin was 40. They are very happily married it seems and they now have two surrogate kids.

The speech by dad at the end was worth the whole movie!!!

Shame you didn't realize the subtitles were there till half an hour in xD I get how that would make it feel a little slow and difficult to get into. Also this movie is a very calm and easy paced story, which like you said, makes it feel very real, because it actually feels like we're watching Elio and Oliver fall in love over the course of this entire summer, as opposed to them just meeting at the beginning and having a few scenes before a timejump into a relationship, like with so many other movies. I really love the authenticity of CMBYN. Oh, and yeah, the book, you should give that a go, or the audiobook even, which is narrated by Armie Hammer (Oliver) :) About the age gap, I'm guessing it's less the actual age difference in years and more the teen-adult relationship, cos if you think about it, 7 years isn't a big gap, plenty of people will be in a relatioship with a similar or bigger age difference. I get how it can seem a little weird with the 17 and 24 year olds in this case, but as you mentioned Italy's age of consent is lower than the US, and actually the age of consent in Italy is 14, so Elio will have been of age for three years already, where as Oliver, an American, has been of age for six years, so if you look at it that way there really isn't too much of a difference. I think it's a cultural thing though, like in Denmark where I'm from, the age of consent is 15, which is the case for the majority of European countries. The first physical relationship I had, I was 16 and he was, I believe, 27, so there was a bigger gap even, but all perfectly legal and ethically acceptable. I also think it really depends on who you are as a person, and your maturity, because honestly the level of maturity can be very, very different between two 17 year olds, one can, like Elio for instance, be very mature and confident in themselves and who they are, or at least exploring who they are, while another can be childish and insecure and not have a clue who they are or how to act. So even though there, rightly so, are legal age limits, I still think that it's a sort of gray-ish area for some. The music in the movie is great! You should definitely check out the three sort of main songs, all by Sufjan Stevens: "Futile Devices (Doveman Remix)" - "Mystery of Love" - "Visions of Gideon" "Mystery of Love" was nominated for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures at the Oscars. The movie was nominated in Best Picture of the Year as well, and Timothée Chalamet was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role (the youngest actor to have been nominated in almost 80 years) and James Ivory won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.

I understand how sometimes the movie can feel slow, but I really don't mind that, because it builds up their relationship very well and make it seem real. I also really love the speech of Elios dad, it was so good and well done, and the ending as well; I think it was beautifully sad and well done too. I can understand how you feel about the age gap, because Elio would be under age in America, but I believe that in most countries in Europe the legal age of concent is around 15/16, so they didn't do anything wrong, and it wasn't like Oliver was as old as Elios dad, so the age gap didn't bother me, and Elio wasn't forced to do anything. The movie has great acting, great writing, great music etc. I love it, but I can understand, why you have mixed feelings about it.

Art is multifaceted. Everyone can find something that makes life richer. No matter if it`s a movie, music or something else it`s not about if it good or bad. It`s about to make a moment in time precious by watching or listening. How lucky we are to find the right piece of art for us individually. As different as we are as human beings in the same way we need different things to make us feel good/better. It wasn`t a movie for me but I`m glad that it brings joy to many people.

I'm kind of glad he picked this.. so this could get out of the polls.. and we could start something fresh so over seeing this on the poles just my opinion

in Norway age of consent is 16 years. I think, in some countries lower than that...

Andre Aciman, the writer of the book, played one of the men in this old gay couple(low bold man)

Austin Peterson

Honestly I wanna see him react to Shelter it’s probably the best gay romance movie with the best ending ever

Totally agree with Jay on this one. I think it's a good movie, but I'm not sure I LIKE it. The scene with the Dad at the end on the couch was fantastic. But the movie is slow as molasses. Actually they poured some molasses while they filmed the movie, and the molasses moved faster. In fact, the molasses lapped the movie, took a tea break, and then finished the race before the movie even got to the quarter mile post.

Stephen

On a side note, did anyone else noticed the pattern on Elio's shorts seemed to be the same as the shirt Jay was wearing???

Elio and Oliver always annoyed me and couldn’t get on board with their relationship. It was just weird. Though the scene with Elio and his father is amazing. Brilliant, and is worth watching the entire film for. Also, wonderful facial acting when Elio discovers Oliver is getting married. He conveys all the pain and hurt so well in his face. Apart from that, I can leave the rest, even though it’s very beautiful and I love Italy. I read the book, and disliked that even more. The film misses out the visit to Rome, which is the most fun bit in the book. And also, in the book they visit each other as adults — which is quite interesting. Though if you thought the peach scene was weird, they wisely leave the “Scat” scene out of the film too.

The age gap was an unnecessary author's choice and even though the romance was pushed by the younger one, it was bound to make some uncomfortable. I loved the movie particularly for the brilliance of Timothee Chalamet's acting and the fact that it was a gay love story without the usual issues of disapproval, etc. The only villain was time, a summer love that would end. That's a villain that can never be defeated. And that's what broke my heart about the end.

Finally watched this movie. This movie destroyed me.

RE the age gap. Keep in mind this was in the 80s. there was literally no internet. it's not like you could go on grindr to meet guys. They literally both thought they were sick for liking another man.
