This is one of the episodes I always think of when I tell people that, for as much as pretty much all the characters on the show seem to believe that Stefan is the "good" brother and Damon is the "bad" brother (including both Stefan and Damon), IMO that's really not the case – as far as I’m concerned, there is no “good” brother in the Salvatore family. Stefan really isn't any morally superior to Damon, and I'll throw Caroline and Jeremy in there, too as being just as selfish as Damon. The hybrid, Chris, was a good guy; Tyler considered him a friend and part of his pack, and he had actually helped them earlier in the episode. But Stefan, Caroline, & Jeremy made a choice that Elena's life was more valuable than Chris’s. It was an entirely selfish choice and NOT the choice of a “good” person. Now, Damon was almost certainly part of this decision, too, (he clearly knew they were going to find a vampire for Jeremy to kill; it’s not clear he knew the specifics, but I have no reason to believe he didn’t) but the difference is that Damon is always up front about the fact that he’s going to make the selfish choice. Damon would admit, he did it because Elena mattered to him and Chris didn’t. But Caroline tried to justify their actions by saying “we had to help our friend”, as if she somehow convinced herself that it was the morally right thing to do, and I’d be willing to bet that Stefan and Jeremy were both making similar arguments in their own minds. But it wasn’t the choice of a good person, it was a selfish choice. I’m not saying I blame any of them for making that choice, but as the saying goes, people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones so, IMO, after doing something like this, they really have no leg to stand on the next time Damon does something selfish that they object to and they act all morally outraged over it.

Great reaction. This episode is one of the best on re-watch as opposed to the first time watch. Throughout the show Elena has been suffering from survivors guilt and blaming herself for her parents death. In this episode, to a degree she accidentally confronted it. The curse was bringing all of her fears out to the surface. There is also the parallel of Damon pushing Elena into the water to save her as opposed to Stefan pulling her out of the water to save her. There's other stuff in there too. Stelena had been apart for over 6 months, they were already 2 totally different people trying to get back the relationship they once had while they'd both changed. Elena has never really looked to plan a future with Stefan. In 2x20 when she thought she was going to turn she admitted she didn't know what love was and was complaining about not having the option of having a family. I'm not entirely sure she understood it in 3x22 either. When she turned, her feelings for Damon were magnified, but her feelings for Stefan weren't. She loved Stefan, but whether she was in love Stefan is a different matter.
