Great reaction. Out of the early S4 episodes, this is my least favourite as it seems a little choppy at times, although there's some really funny moments. Human Elena is more like human Damon than human Stefan. They both suffer from PTSD, he was in the civil war which was bloody and gruesome. There is no way it couldn't have affected him. Elena has it because of her parents dying. When they turned, this darkness was magnified. Neither Stefan, nor Caroline had that issue. As Emily Bennett said about Stefan, he was pure. Stefan couldn't handle Katherine being a vampire killer. Damon and Elena had no such qualms with their partners being mass murderers, whereas Stefan and Caroline both had to be compelled. Elena has tried Stefan's way of being a vampire and it doesn't suit her, she's miserable and until she finds a way to suit her, she will be miserable. Damon was exactly the same until he met Sage. Elena is essentially still the same character, she is just trying to find her feet and adapt to her new life. There was a clever piece of imagery in this episode with a scene that was a gigantic reference to a hugely famous movie scene.

This episode sets the stage for future events/team ups. Not gonna day any names but they’re in plain sight. Rebecca is my fav Original and it’s funny bc her character kind of flips in the Originals. She kind of becomes the noble sister in the way that she becomes a mixture of Niklaus & Elijah. I love her petty side when it comes to Elena but I LOVE her on the Originals. Also, one the backbone of the Originals is planted in this episode. I can’t wait for you to put things together.

I agree about how Damon and Elena are more like each other, how they both had a lot of trauma in their human lives before they turned. I have a theory that it plays a part in why they each were originally attracted to vampires. Actually, in Elena's case, it's not just a theory. In the season 3 episode 1912, Elena told Matt that one of the reasons she fell for Stefan was because he made her feel safe, like he'd never leave her, like he'd never die, and Matt immediately got it and said, like your parents did. (Not to say that's even close to the only reason Elena fell for either Stefan or Damon, but it definitely played a part.) My theory is that the reasons Damon fell so hard for Katherine were very similar. He'd just been a soldier in the Civil War, the most brutal, bloody war in U.S. history, he probably watched a lot of close friends get killed. Then he came home and met a beautiful, charming woman who would never die. I'm sure Damon was attracted to Katherine before he found out she was a vampire, but I think the very fact that she would never die made her even more attractive to him. I think all the death Damon had to face during the war, something Stefan never had to deal with, explains why Damon wanted Katherine more when he found out she was a vampire, whereas Stefan had to be compelled to not be afraid of her.
