  • Perfectionism is the French Revolution
  • Evolution is the organic, messy, disorganized but (until 2016, largely functional) British constitution and its surrounding polity
  • At the dinner table and in bed, be French -- eatin' good and lovin' good
  • In the shower, be American -- generously using strong chemicals to wash the dirt and sin away
  • And in the garden, that is, in situations requiring you to strike a deal with powerful natural forces and achieving a mutually pleasing movus vivendi, be bit British
  • Don't be so British that you become a monolingual with poor oral hygiene, though. That's a bit too British. #justsayin
  • Perfectionism leads to violence and destruction. Pol Pot was perfectionist. That ninja (he was trained in ninjutsu, true story, totally not something I just made up) wanted to start everything from scratch. Year Zero. Eugenics is perfectionism applied to human beings -- kill the bad ones and keep the nice-looking ones. Sure, eugenics produced the wonderful, wealthy utopia that was Sparta but -- wait, what's that? Sparta was a brutal military nightmare with zero cultural output, run by sadists who enslaved entire nations of fellow Greeks? I rest my case.
  • Evolution is about cooperation, compromise and building on what already exists.
  • Build on what you already have. Nothing is truly a waste of time if used right. It doesn't mean that everything is worth continuing to do, it just means that life is forgiving of mess if you are, and will even reward it.
  • In terms of learning process (not actual utterances), your mistakes are the soil of your future success. Don't erase them -- turn them into compost.

Khatz do you consider yourself to be native-level at japanese?

Much appreciated Khatz. I believe the Japanese learning community would really love to see a MIA/AJATT interview. Could that possibly be in the works?
