I've recently been re-reading the very earliest issues of The Incredible Hulk. I noticed that by the end of the initial six issue run, Banner's transformations into the Hulk are brought about by exposing himself to repeated gamma ray bursts. By the time the character next appears in Tales to Astonish, the version of the Hulk we're all more familiar with, with Banner's transformations being brought about by his emotional state is established. We never get an explanation why the nature of his transformations changes, although in the latter issues of the first Hulk book, we do see that continuous exposure to gamma radiation is having some strange effects on Banner's body. Anyways, I wanted to do a little Betty TF in the Jack Kirby/Steve Ditko style (my favourite early issue of Hulk is no. 2, "Terror of the Toad Men", pencilled by Kirby inked by Ditko). At the end of issue 6, Bruce and Betty stroll off into town on a date.

In this scenario, Betty is kidnapped by thugs leaving a frantic Banner  racfing after them in a futile attempt at rescue. His heightened emotional state triggers a fantastic change in his body chemistry, now forever altered by his continued exposure to gamma rays. For the first time, strong emotion brings about the transformation into the Hulk!

Meanwhile Betty has been hiding a secret of her own-- concerned for her would-be boyfriend, Betty enters Banner's lab to find out more about his secretive work. Accidentally triggering the gamma ray projector, Betty is bathed in gamma rays causing her to transform into a female hulk! And just like Banner in those first few days and weeks, night is the trigger for the astounding metamorphosis...

Yes! Always down for a silver age Betty Hulkout! Nice extrapolation of the old Hulk comics and nice juxtaposition of the two classic triggers.

I've always loved this idea myself and thanks to you and Terry the idea has been explored in both visual and written format. When Marvel introduced Betty as the Red She-Hulk it always felt like an inferior version to the Grey She-Hulk you two cooked up. On top of this,I love both Jen's savage and sensational variations though Jen is largely defined and established in her sensational self these days.Having Betty being the Savage She-Hulk while Jen remains the Sensational is a nice concept(and a damn sight better than the Harpy nonsense that Betty's been subjected to)

But yeah it really did seem like the Hulk shifted very quickly through a couple of different transformation triggers with the changing at night thing being done first, then the deliberate exposure gimmick before the emotional trigger was finally settled upon. But the character and writing team were only just finding their feet so it makes sense and we ended up with the not so jolly green giant(and eventually giantess) we all know and love. Excellent work here btw.

Great again She Hulk transformation.

Red She-Hulk was originally planned as a return of a savage-era Shulky to coexist along with sensational Jen. But as usual with Marvel and their Hulk titles, it quickly descended into a confused shambles.

AC Marvel

Color it please

Big fan of this one! Wouldn't be opposed to a more detailed origin comic...

I really like this piece. She doesn’t want it, but understand it is going to happen.

Agent Zero

I'm always down for more Betty TF's. More of this please!

Honestly would love to see a Hulk and Red She Hulk tf over... romantically frustrating tensions.

If I remember correctly, you had tackled this story in some form years ago, also in B&W, with Betty being chased by soldiers and she hides in the lab, accidently activating the machine and initiating the change. Would love to see either that or the current iteration colored.
