I've never seen any rendition of this story before and this was just so, so good. I had a blast watching it and it was just super entertaining!

NOTE: You follow along with your own copy of the movie; I have a little timer right at the beginning where it counts down and shows the word "play" when I myself start playing the movie. I also have a timer synced throughout the movie so you're also in sync the whole time! If you don't have your own copy, then you'll have pretty much no idea what's happening!

I’ve never clicked on a reaction video so fast! I love this movie! It’s pure entertainment all the way through. It swept the Oscars that year - no surprise. The main characters were played by actors that the public didn’t generally know could sing and dance. They were known only for their acting in movies. Renee Zellweger (Roxie) didn’t have a background in musical theater, but she did great. Before this, she was known for comedic and romantic roles — Jerry Maguire (1996), Me, Myself and Irene (2000), Bridget Jones Diary (2001). Catherine Zeta-Jones (Velma) had an extensive background in musical theater, but was mainly known for her sexy roles in movies like The Mask of Zorro (1998), Entrapment (1999) and Traffic (2000). By the way, she became a household name for a single scene in Entrapment - the sexiest art heist you could ever imagine! She won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Chicago. Richard Gere (Billy Flynn) also had a music, dance and theater background. But he was a superstar romantic lead with a long list of films: American Gigolo (1980) — his breakout role— An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), Breathless (1983), Pretty Woman (1990), Sommersby (1993), Primal Fear (1996), The Jackal (1997) and at least a dozen more. He won the Golden Globe for Chicago. You know John C. Reilly from Boogie Nights — Reed Rothchild aka Chest Rockwell. He’s a character actor who’d done a couple dozen films before Chicago, primary dramas. He’s best known for more recent comedies that he’s done with Will Ferrell. And you know Christine Baranski (Mary Sunshine) from The Birdcage (Val’s biological mother). She’s done a lot of Broadway shows. She’s also been in a ton of films, usually in comedic and musical roles. You really must check out Mama Mia! (2008)! Chicago is the longest running Broadway musical - choreographed and co-written by the legendary Bob Fosse. His dance style is unmistakable. The film was made long after his death. It’s got a lot of new choreography that isn’t in the stage show but it was really true to his style. You really need to see his masterpiece — Cabaret (1972). He directed and choreographed it and it swept the Academy Awards that year - everything but best picture which went to The Godfather. It’s one of the most iconic musicals put on film. I also highly recommend Fosse’s film All That Jazz (1979) - written and directed. It’s an original musical. It was never done on stage. It’s semi-autobiographical and has really amazing acting and dancing. Thank you for this reaction! I enjoyed it thoroughly!

Also pretty amusing that years after this film, Zellweger won an Oscar for playing musical superstar Judy Garland.

Maurine Dallas Watkin was a journalist for The Chicago Tribune during the 1920s when she wrote the original play. It was based on two real life trials and inspired by a series of sensationalized homicides of men attributed to the women in their lives. There was a string of 186 of them in Cook County between 1921 and 1930, and it was blamed on jazz and liquor by the press and the public. Chicago is even more interesting when you view it as a reflection of 1920s Chicago. Great job, thx!
