Hey there! Thank you for being a Patron! Here's the full reaction to CONTACT!

We're just watching all the trippy movies lately, huh? 😂 This was definitely another one of those, but there was also just... so much STUFF that happened, it was a lot, but I thought it was well done overall and I enjoyed myself. Also, apologies for the long talks at the end of this one 😂

NOTE: You follow along with your own copy of the movie; I have a little timer right at the beginning where it counts down and shows the word "play" when I myself start playing the movie. I also have a timer synced throughout the movie so you're also in sync the whole time! If you don't have your own copy, then you'll have pretty much no idea what's happening!

I read the book first, and loved it, particularly the proof-of-the-existence-of-God section (and I'm an atheist). I do think this movie is a good adaptation of the book.

Carl Sagan wrote a number of books, all worth reading. You might also want to read about the man himself. He was a brilliant astrophysicist and astrobiologist who made incredible scientific contributions that propelled our knowledge of the universe forward. He was very well known. He had a tv show called Cosmos back in the early 80s. He could explain things in a way that made sense to the average person (kinda like Neil deGrasse Tyson). The public was riveted. I’m guessing the show can be found somewhere on the internet. Sagan also had a very distinctive voice and speech cadence. Everybody did impressions of him…and I mean everybody.

Ryan

His "mind blown" clip from Cosmos is especially memetic.

To me the selling point of the film is the theme of faith. Ellie's was science, Palmer's was God. But it's how faith in itself can be interchangeable depending on the situation. Ellie wasn't given the chance to be the person picked for the first transport (luckily for her) not because of her faith in science but her faith in a higher power. She relies on evidence. This is all turned around when she wants everyone to have faith in her who now demand their own evidence that even she can't provide. If I had been Ellie when told that 95% of the world's population believes in a higher power of some kind I would have asked how much of that 95% still tells their children there is a Santa Clause.
