This film is easily one of the most visually stunning that I've seen. It has a gorgeous, wonderfully imaginative look and feel but my goodness, it's a dark ride. It says something when JAKOB THE LIAR (another R Williams film about life in a Nazi occupied Warsaw slum during WW2) is practically a laugh fest. I still get pissed when I think about how Roger Ebert hated the ending for being too conventional and 'easy'.
