Hey hey hey! Here's some things that I've read in the past week that you might enjoy. I also included a snapshot of books that I scooped from a bookstore and added to my "to read" list.

1) Indian Slavery Once Thrived in New Mexico. Latinos Are Finding Family Ties to It. (Simon Romero) 1/28/18

Length: Long

2) A Living Death: Life Without Parole For Non-Violent Offenses  (Published by The American Civil Liberties Union)

This thorough report (downloadable as a PDF) will break your heart. I'm visiting New Orleans for Mardi Gras in less than two weeks and this will be on my mind the whole time.

Length: EXTRA Long. Basically book length.

3) How the Super Bowl Will Influence Your Diet, and 6 Other Fascinating Facts About Food Psychology (Jenny Luna) 1/26/18

Apparently I love salty food because my mother had horrible morning sickness. "In the early 1990s, researchers at the University of Washington found that many adults who craved salt had mothers who’d experienced morning sickness during pregnancy."

Length: Short

4) India has 63 million ‘missing’ women and 21 million unwanted girls, government says  (Annie Gowen) 1/29/18

Gender preference continues to rear it's ugly head. China isn't the only country experiencing a shortage of women.

Length: Short

5) The Peoples Grocery Lynching, Memphis, Tennessee (Damon Mitchell) 1/24/18

Some of you might remember me mentioning this event in a video or written essay about Ida B. Wells. This excellent piece goes into detail about the vicious lynching that catalyzed her research and activism.

Length: Medium

6) The Best Book Club You’ll Ever Join: The Free Black Women’s Library Places Us Front and Center (Maiysha Kai)  1/29/17

There is a black woman collecting a free library of black female authors and its the best news I've read all week.

Length: Short

7) Far-right media pundits are now calling for a police state (Matthew Sheffield) 1/29/18

It continues to be clear that we need to establish new media platforms. Left-wing outlets are incredibly bad, but right-wing outlets are truly wicked.

Length: Long
